Insects

The Reserve has a number of different types of insects. These tiny creatures play a major role in the balance of our ecosystem. Insects are the largest group within the arthropod phylum. They have a chitinous exoskeleton, a three-part body (head, thorax and abdomen), three pairs of jointed legs, compound eyes, one pair of antennae, and typically one or two pairs of wings. Examples of insects found in the Reserve are the cicada and the cocktail ant.

  • Apis mellifera capensis (Cape Honey bee)

  • Crematogaster peringueyi (Black cocktail ant)

  • DALAPAX POSTICA (PLANT HOPPERS)

  • Eristalinus taeniops (Hover fly)

  • Eupeodes corollae (Hover Fly)

  • Maxentius pallidus (Cape/Pale Sand Cricket)

  • Orthetrum julia (Julia Skimmer, Cape Skimmer)

  • Platypleura capensis (The Cicadas of South Africa)

  • Polistes badius (Paper Wasp)
