Arachnids

Arachnids are similar to insects, but have eight appendages (four pairs of legs) and no antennae. Their body is divided into two parts, the cephalothorax and the abdomen. These wingless, carnivorous creatures include spiders, scorpions, mites, ticks, and daddy-longlegs. The early morning dew on webs in Steenbok gives a clear indication that spiders are thriving in the Reserve.

  • Gea infuscata (Doilie Orb-Web Spider)

  • Latrodectus geometricus Koch (Brown widow)

  • Leucauge festiva (Masked Vlei Spider)
