Brood parasitic, lays in nests of waxbills. Black and white breeding male with red bill and long black tail. Non-breeding male same as female. Female has head and face striped dark brown and buff, bill black when breeding, red in non-breeding season. Breeding male aggressive to other birds at feeding areas. Uncovers seeds with a double scratch. 22cm tail
