A rufous bird with striking crest, black and white wings and lower back, white banded black tail. Feeds on ground by walking and probing with its long thin curved bill, and digs vigorously. Sings in spring, ‘hoo-poo’. Requires bare earth, lawn or short grassy sward for foraging. Does not drink. Dust bathes frequently.
